New Delhi. During the current Rabi season, a good increase is being seen in the production area of pulse crops compared to last year. The sowing season is just beginning, but its pace may increase further.
According to official data, in the current Rabi season, till November 7, 2025, the total area under pulse crops in the domestic division has increased to 36.83 lakh hectares, which is 6.40 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 30.43 lakh hectares during the same period last year. Under this, the area under gram has increased the most.
The latest data of the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that during the current Rabi season, compared to last year, the area under gram production has jumped from 20.51 lakh hectares to 26.81 lakh hectares,
the area under lentils has improved from 4.13 lakh hectares to 4.38 lakh hectares, the area under peas has increased from 2.51 lakh hectares to 3.38 lakh hectares and the area under horse gram has improved from 75 thousand hectares to 82 thousand hectares, but the area under black gram has fallen from 97 thousand hectares to 53 thousand hectares.
The sowing of moong has just started, while the area under other pulses has slipped from 74 thousand hectares to 68 thousand hectares.
Due to the substantial increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of gram and lentils by the Central Government, imposition of 30 percent import duty on yellow peas and presence of sufficient moisture in the soil of the fields,
farmers in the major producing states are getting good encouragement to increase the sowing area of pulses. For the current Rabi season, the five-year average area of pulses has been fixed at 140.42 lakh hectares,
which includes an average area of 101 lakh hectares for gram, 15.13 lakh hectares for lentils, 6.50 lakh hectares for peas, 1.98 lakh hectares for horse gram, 6.16 lakh hectares for black gram and 1.41 lakh hectares for green gram.
