Maize sowing surges in key states, but declines at all-India level
★ Maize sowing has picked up strong momentum in several major Indian states this year. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture and various state agriculture departments:
★ In Maharashtra, maize has been sown over 11.24 lakh hectares, which is 2.78 lakh hectares more than the same period last year.
★ Telangana also showed impressive progress with an increase of 2.89 lakh hectares.
★ In Rajasthan, the sown area rose by 1.75 lakh hectares, and Andhra Pradesh recorded a marginal increase of 0.04 lakh hectares.
★ Gujarat maintained a nearly stable sowing area compared to last year.
★ Across these five key states, maize has been sown over a total of 15.11 lakh hectares so far, which is 4.69 lakh hectares higher than last year.
★ However, on a pan-India basis, including all states, total maize sowing stood at 39.35 lakh hectares, which is 0.86 lakh hectares lower than the corresponding period last year.
★ These figures are as of 7th to 9th July 2025.
★ I-Grain India believes that considering the high prices and strong demand, maize acreage may increase further in the final sowing figures.
