Kuala Lumpur. The latest data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (Ampob) shows a significant increase in palm oil production and exports during May 2025 compared to April, along with a rise in surplus stock. According to the report, total availability of palm oil products in Malaysia rose to 37.07 lakh tonnes in May 2025, which included a previous stock of 18.66 lakh tonnes, production of 17.72 lakh tonnes, and imports of 69 thousand tonnes.
Out of this, 13.87 lakh tonnes were exported and 3.29 lakh tonnes were used domestically, bringing total usage to 17.17 lakh tonnes. As a result, the surplus stock increased to 19.90 lakh tonnes by the end of May. In April 2025, Malaysia had a previous stock of 15.63 lakh tonnes, with 16.86 lakh tonnes produced and 58 thousand tonnes imported, leading to a total availability of 33.07 lakh tonnes. Of this, 11.04 lakh tonnes were exported and 3.37 lakh tonnes were used domestically, leaving a surplus stock of 18.66 lakh tonnes.
In comparison, during May 2024, the total availability of palm oil stood at 34.70 lakh tonnes, which included a previous stock of 17.45 lakh tonnes, production of 17.04 lakh tonnes, and imports of 21 thousand tonnes. Of this, 13.82 lakh tonnes were exported and 3.34 lakh tonnes were used domestically, resulting in a surplus stock of 17.53 lakh tonnes at the end of the month.
It is important to note that Malaysia is the second-largest producer and exporter of palm oil in the world after Indonesia. The rising surplus stock, now nearing 20 lakh tonnes, is likely to exert downward pressure on prices.
