Mixed Trend Expected in Prices of Chana, Tur and Urad

Mumbai: A leading trade organization, the Indian Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), has projected a mixed price trend for chana (chickpea), tur (pigeon pea), and urad (black gram) over the next few days. According to the association, tur prices are likely to remain stable or slightly weak due to regular supplies and subdued demand, while chana prices may remain range-bound with limited fluctuations. In contrast, urad prices are expected to stay firm or move higher.
Demand for chana from millers and processors remains limited, as consumption of chana dal and besan is not particularly strong. The central buffer stock holds a large quantity of chana, and government agencies such as NAFED and NCCF continue to conduct regular auction sales. As a result, supply and availability remain comfortable. The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for chana has been fixed at ₹5,875 per quintal, and wholesale market prices are currently trading around that level.
Demand for tur is also reported to be weak, while supplies remain adequate. Imports continue to arrive, reducing the likelihood of any major price increase in the near term. Tur sowing area has exceeded last year's level by about 2,000 hectares, and the advancing monsoon is expected to support crop prospects further.
Urad, on the other hand, is witnessing healthy demand. Dal millers and traders are showing active interest in purchases, while arrivals of summer (zaid season) produce are relatively low. Consequently, urad prices have remained firm. In addition, prices are showing signs of strengthening in major exporting countries such as Myanmar and Brazil, which may lend further support to domestic prices.
Imports of desi chana and yellow peas have been declining. Australia, the leading exporter of chickpeas, is reported to have lower stocks, and its next crop is also expected to be significantly smaller. Current import economics are not considered favorable.
With the festive season beginning in August, demand and consumption of chana-based products are expected to rise, which could provide additional support to chana prices in the coming months.
