Monsoon remained weak in June, 11 percent less rainfall than normal level

New Delhi. The southwest monsoon remained relatively weak and sluggish in June, due to which there was 11 percent less rainfall than the normal average at the national level. Even more worrying is that about 50 percent of the country lacked rainfall.
Now everyone's attention is focused on July. It is noteworthy that the Central Government has set a target of record production of 3404 lakh tonnes of food grains for the 2024-25 season on the basis of the forecast of the Meteorological Department.
According to the data of the Meteorological Department, during June 1 to 30, the country received 147.2 mm of rain, which was 89 percent of the long period average (LPA) of 165.3 mm fixed for this month.
There was very little or negligible rainfall during this period in 17 states and union territories of the country.
In this way, almost half of the country remained a victim of drought in June. On the other hand, during the same period, normal or above normal rainfall was recorded in 19 states and union territories.
Although the Meteorological Department had earlier predicted normal rainfall in June, but when the monsoon halted for several days, it revised its forecast and expressed the possibility of less than normal rainfall in June. Usually, rainfall between 94 to 106 percent is considered normal level. 89 percent rainfall occurred in June.
During June 2024, Assam, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Sikkim, Delhi, Ladakh,
Andaman Nicobar, Pondicherry and Lakshadweep received normal or above normal rainfall. On the other hand, the states which received less than normal or very less rainfall include Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Odisha,
Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
