Most Kharif Crops Trade Under MSP

New Delhi: Official data reveals that during the peak harvesting season of Kharif crops in the October-December 2025 quarter, the prices of most major agricultural commodities, except for paddy, remained 9 to 30 percent below their respective Minimum Support Prices (MSP),
resulting in significant financial losses for farmers. Interestingly, despite the lower income from Kharif crops, Indian farmers remained undeterred and increased the area under Rabi crop cultivation by 3 percent compared to the previous year.
According to official data compiled by the Agmarknet portal, the weighted average price of common grade paddy at the all-India level during the quarter under review (October-December 2025) was recorded at Rs 2407 per quintal, which was 1 percent higher than the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 2389 per quintal.
On the other hand, the average price of maize fell to Rs 1684 per quintal, which was 30 percent below the MSP of Rs 2400 per quintal.
In Madhya Pradesh, it fell even further to a low of Rs 1582 per quintal. Similarly, the average price of sorghum fell by 9 percent to Rs 3357 per quintal and the average price of millet fell by 16.5 percent to Rs 2318 per quintal compared to their respective MSPs.
Prices of pulses also witnessed a decline. During the quarter under review, the weighted average price at the all-India level for moong (green gram) fell by 25 percent to Rs 6575 per quintal,
tur (pigeon pea) by 17.5 percent to Rs 6599 per quintal, and urad (black gram) by 22 percent to Rs 6090 per quintal, relative to their respective Minimum Support Prices.
Among the major producing states, the weakest prices compared to the Minimum Support Price (MSP) were recorded in Karnataka for moong dal at ₹4949 per quintal, in Rajasthan for tur dal at ₹5040 per quintal, and in Telangana for urad dal at ₹4804 per quintal.
