MP to Procure Moong, Urad at MSP

The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to begin the procurement of moong and urad produced during the summer or zaid season at the minimum support price (MSP). The registration of farmers for this scheme will begin on June 19, 2025, and the procurement process will start soon after. A proposal has been sent to the central government for approval, and the process will commence once it is cleared.
For the 2024–25 marketing season, the central government has set the MSP of moong at ₹8,682 per quintal and urad at ₹7,900 per quintal. These pulses will be procured from farmers at these fixed price levels. Madhya Pradesh is one of the few states that grow a significant quantity of moong and urad during the zaid season. Earlier, the Union Agriculture Minister had approved the MSP procurement of moong and groundnut during the zaid season in Uttar Pradesh and had also assured procurement of other crops like urad and maize.
In India, most pulses and oilseeds are cultivated in the Kharif and Rabi seasons, while zaid season production is limited to a few states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.
Currently, the wholesale market prices of moong and urad have fallen below the MSP, causing losses to farmers. Government procurement at the support price is expected to provide much-needed relief.
The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has urged farmers to register themselves in order to benefit from the scheme. Farmers had expressed concern over delays in registration, especially with the monsoon approaching and preparations underway for Kharif sowing. The government's decision has helped ease their concerns.
