News Capsule: Additional Procurement of 6 Lakh Metric Tonnes of Rice from Odisha
★ The Central government has approved the procurement of an additional 6 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of rice from the State.
Of the total 6 lakh MT to be procured by the Centre, 5 lakh MT will be boiled rice, which will be lifted by April. The State has a total surplus of 7 lakh MT of rice, of which the remaining 1 lakh MT will be sold through auction.
★ Typically, the Central government procures around 50 lakh MT of rice from Odisha every year.
★ Paddy procurement is currently underway in 18 out of 30 districts of the State. During the ongoing kharif season, about 10.50 lakh MT of paddy has been procured so far.
★ Paddy procurement will continue till March.
