News Capsule: Bangladesh–India Trade: Purchases Continue Despite Tensions
★ Despite recent strains in India–Bangladesh relations, Bangladesh has approved the purchase of 50,000 tonnes of rice from India. The Bangladeshi government stated that it is keeping economic interests separate from political issues, as importing rice from India helps save around 10 taka per kg.
★ Bangladesh imports not only rice from India, but also wheat, sugar, onions, potatoes, spices, medicines, and raw materials such as cotton and yarn for its textile industry. The country also depends on India for refined petroleum products to meet its energy needs.
★ Any disruption in supplies from India could put pressure on inflation, industrial activity, and employment in Bangladesh. Therefore, despite political tensions, trade between the two countries is expected to continue.
