News Capsule: Centre’s Foodgrain Reserves at Record High Despite El Niño Threat to Kharif Production
★ Despite concerns over a possible impact of El Niño on Kharif 2026 production, India’s foodgrain reserves remain at record levels. As of June 1, 2026, total foodgrain stocks in the central pool stood at approximately 1,218 lakh tonnes.
★ Rice stocks (including paddy): 684 lakh tonnes, about 15% higher than a year ago.
★ Wheat stocks: 534 lakh tonnes, the highest level in the past five years.
★ The sharp rise in government stocks has been driven by record wheat procurement and strong foodgrain production during 2025-26. The ample reserves are expected to help the government manage any potential production shortfall or food inflation arising from adverse weather conditions.
★ However, risks to the Kharif season remain elevated due to the developing El Niño. The Agriculture Ministry has directed states to prepare contingency plans for 326 vulnerable districts across 12 states. Authorities are emphasizing water conservation, moisture management, alternative cropping systems, and short-duration crop varieties to mitigate weather-related risks.

Market Impact
★ Record government stocks are likely to limit any sharp rise in wheat and rice prices.
★ Pulses, oilseeds, and other rain-dependent Kharif crops remain more vulnerable to El Niño-related weather disruptions.
★ Rainfall performance over the next 4–8 weeks will be crucial in determining Kharif production prospects and the direction of agricultural commodity markets.
