News Capsule: DGFT Tightens Import Rules for Areca Nut, Sets Minimum Import Price at ₹351/kg
★ The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has revised import regulations for areca nut to curb low-priced imports and protect domestic producers.
★ As per the latest notification, import of raw areca nut (other) under ITC (HS) code 08028090 will be prohibited if the CIF value is below ₹351 per kilogram. Imports valued at ₹351 or above per kilogram will remain free.
★ Similarly, import of roasted areca nut and seeds under ITC (HS) code 20081991 will remain free, provided the CIF value is not below ₹351 per kilogram. Imports priced lower than this threshold will fall under the prohibited category.
★ DGFT has also clarified that this restriction will apply to imports made by 100% Export-Oriented Units (EOUs), Special Economic Zones (SEZs), or under the Advance Authorisation Scheme.
★ The move aims to curb undervaluation and dumping of low-priced areca nuts in the Indian market while supporting domestic farmers and traders. This step could lead to a rise in areca nut prices in the domestic market.
