Global Sugar Market: Prices Rise
★ According to Brazil's Unica agency, sugarcane crushing in the Central-South region during the first half of September increased 6.9% year-on-year to 46 million tons, but the sugar content in the cane fell to 154.58 kg/ton from 160.07 kg/ton last year. This is expected to put pressure on total sugar production.
★ Pakistan has placed orders for 320,000 tons of sugar for immediate delivery.
★ According to StoneX, the global sugar surplus for the 2025-26 season is projected at 2.8 million tons, compared to a deficit of 4.7 million tons in 2024-25.
★ In Brazil, sugar production in the first half of September rose 15.7% to 3.622 million tons, with 53.49% of crushed cane used for sugar, up from 47.74% last year. However, total seasonal output fell 0.1% to 30.388 million tons.
★ In India, favorable monsoon rains are expected to boost sugarcane yields, with sugar production projected to rise 19% to 34.9 million tons in 2025-26, up from 26.2 million tons in 2024-25. Indian sugar mills may export up to 4 million tons of sugar in the new season, exceeding the earlier estimate of 2 million tons.
★ Thailand is also expected to increase sugar production by 5% to 10.5 million tons in 2025-26, following a 14% rise to 10 million tons in 2024-25.
★ Currently, concerns over lower sugar recovery in Brazil have pushed prices higher. However, rising production in India, Thailand, and other countries, along with forecasts of a global surplus, is expected to keep long-term pressure on the market.
