News Capsule: India Becomes World’s Largest Rice Producer: Agriculture Minister
★ India has overtaken China in rice production to become the world’s largest producer. India’s total rice output stood at 150.18 million tonnes, while China produced 145.28 million tonnes, the Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.
★ The minister stated that India is not only meeting its domestic demand but is also supplying rice to international markets. The country has adequate foodgrain stocks, which has strengthened food security.
★ Rice production in India has been increasing steadily over the past several years. However, the continuous rise in production has put pressure on prices, leading to lower market rates. As a result, farmers are not getting remunerative prices for their produce.
