News Capsule: Monsoon Set to Advance Across North India in Next 5-6 Days; IMD Warns of Heatwave in UP
★ The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into several northern states over the next five to six days. During the next 2-3 days, the monsoon is expected to cover more parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the North Arabian Sea, followed by Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and southeast Rajasthan.
★ Despite the advancing monsoon, the IMD has warned of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh on June 28-29. Delhi continued to experience intense heat due to the delayed monsoon, with the maximum temperature touching 41.8°C and the "feels-like" temperature rising to 50.7°C. Thunderstorms and rain are expected in the capital from June 30.
★ The IMD has also forecast increased rainfall activity across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan over the coming days, with thunderstorms, gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall likely in several areas from July 2 onward.
