News Capsule: Record Pulses Buffer Stock to Shield Market from El Niño Impact
★ The Indian government’s record pulses buffer stock of 4.3 million tonnes is expected to act as a safeguard against supply disruptions or price spikes caused by a possible El Niño event and a below-normal monsoon. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said the buffer stock would be used if El Niño adversely affects kharif sowing and production.
★ The current stock is significantly higher than 1.8 million tonnes in May 2025 and 2.1 million tonnes in May 2024. The increase has been driven by the government's assured procurement policy aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing import dependence. Officials said pulses can be safely stored for two to three years, while the government is also preparing contingency plans to manage any weather-related risks to the kharif crop.
