News Capsule: Rice procurement up 7% in October–December; 72% of kharif target achieved
★ During the first three months of the ongoing kharif marketing season (October–December 2025), India’s government procurement of rice rose by 7 percent to 333.72 lakh tonnes, compared with 312.60 lakh tonnes in the same period last year. With this, around 72 percent of the government’s kharif procurement target of 463.49 lakh tonnes has been achieved. Total rice procurement in the entire 2024–25 season stood at 545.22 lakh tonnes.
★ In Tamil Nadu, procurement surged by 179 percent to 10.09 lakh tonnes from 3.62 lakh tonnes a year ago.
★ In Telangana, procurement increased by 27.3 percent to 35.96 lakh tonnes, while Andhra Pradesh recorded a sharp rise of 109.3 percent to 22.65 lakh tonnes, compared with 10.82 lakh tonnes last year.
★ In West Bengal, rice procurement has reached 10.27 lakh tonnes so far this year, whereas it is usually negligible at this stage.
★ In Uttar Pradesh, total procurement improved to 24.45 lakh tonnes, up 2.4 percent from 23.88 lakh tonnes last year.
★ Madhya Pradesh reported a 35.3 percent increase to 22.52 lakh tonnes, while procurement in Uttarakhand rose by 15.4 percent to 5.01 lakh tonnes.
★ On the other hand, procurement in Punjab declined by 9.7 percent to 104.80 lakh tonnes from 116.13 lakh tonnes a year ago.
★ Haryana recorded procurement of 35.96 lakh tonnes, almost at the same level as last year.
★ In Chhattisgarh, where procurement runs from November 1 to January 31, purchases so far are down 16.2 percent at 44.26 lakh tonnes.
★ Odisha reported a 12.2 percent decline to 6.91 lakh tonnes, while Maharashtra saw a 19.2 percent fall to 2.74 lakh tonnes.
★ In Bihar, procurement also dipped marginally to 6.74 lakh tonnes.
★ According to the Ministry of Agriculture, rice production in the 2025–26 kharif season is estimated at a record 124.5 million tonnes, up 1.4 percent from 122.77 million tonnes in the previous year.
