News Capsule: Sugar Sales Quota Likely to Increase in the Coming Month
★ The quota in January 2026 may be set at 2.3 million tonnes, compared with 2.2 million tonnes in December 2025. In January 2025, the quota was 2.25 million tonnes.
★ According to ISMA, sugar production this year could be higher than last year. In addition, lower quantities of ethanol being approved in tenders and reduced sales of sugar-based ethanol may lead to less diversion of sugar toward ethanol. Overall, sugar output this year is higher than last year.
★ With ethanol prices not being realized and no increase in sugar MSP, the financial condition of mills is gradually deteriorating, which has also started to impact cane payment.
★ Global sugar prices are low, affecting exports. The weakening of the rupee is also having an impact.
★ IGrain India believes that considering the above factors, the monthly sugar sales quota may be increased in January 2026.
