No Change Expected in Sugar Carryover Stocks

New Delhi. The apex industry body, ISMA, has stated that at the commencement of the current 2025-26 marketing season, the domestic industry held a carryover stock of 50.03 lakh tonnes of sugar, and a surplus stock of the exact same quantity is expected to remain available at the end of the season as well.
According to ISMA's report, the total domestic sugar production for the 2025-26 season is projected to be 320 lakh tonnes. Of this, after utilizing 35 lakh tonnes for ethanol production, a stock of 285 lakh tonnes will remain available for food consumption purposes; combined with the opening carryover stock of 50.03 lakh tonnes,
the total availability will reach 335.03 lakh tonnes. From this total, 277 lakh tonnes is projected for domestic consumption and 8 lakh tonnes for exports, leaving a closing stock of 50.03 lakh tonnes at the end of the season.
According to ISMA, the 2024-25 season began with a carryover stock of 78 lakh tonnes, while the gross production amounted to 295.07 lakh tonnes. Of this, 34.04 lakh tonnes was utilized for ethanol production, leaving a stock of 261.03 lakh tonnes available for food consumption purposes. Domestic consumption stood at 280 lakh tonnes, while 9 lakh tonnes was exported.
