New Delhi: Under the Pulses Mission, the Central Government has directed all states to maximize the production of high-quality and high-yielding pulse seeds, with the aim of ensuring their adequate availability to farmers at reasonable prices.
Financial assistance is being provided for seed production purposes. Under this initiative, provisions have been made for financial aid amounting to ₹4,500 per quintal (100 kg) for Tur (Pigeon Pea), ₹2,000 per quintal for Urad (Black Gram), and ₹1,800 per quintal for Chana (Chickpea); this assistance is intended to incentivize farmers to produce high-quality seeds.
Vigorous efforts are underway to rapidly integrate new varieties of pulses into the existing seed chain. In this context, 79 seed varieties have been identified in Rajasthan, 58 in Gujarat, 63 in Madhya Pradesh, and 58 in Maharashtra.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, over 60 percent of the country's pulse production is concentrated in four states: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Additionally, other states—including Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand—also record significant pulse production.
The performance regarding pulse production has been exceptional in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh; Jhalawar and Tonk in Rajasthan; Gadchiroli in Maharashtra; and Junagadh in Gujarat. Consequently, these districts are set to be developed as "Model Districts" to serve as an inspiration for farmers in other regions.
