New Delhi. Due to good procurement of rice and wheat, the stock of food grains in the central pool increased to 739.80 lakh tonnes on July 1, 2025, which is 9.38 lakh tonnes less than the stock of 749.18 lakh tonnes available on June 1, 2025, but 131.05 lakh tonnes more than the stock of 608.75 lakh tonnes available on July 1, 2024. Earlier, on July 1, 2023, a stock of 554.94 lakh tonnes of food grains was recorded in the central pool.

In comparison to June, in early July, the stock of rice fell by 5.10 lakh tonnes from 379.90 lakh tonnes to 374.80 lakh tonnes and the stock of wheat fell by 4.28 lakh tonnes from 369.28 lakh tonnes to 365 lakh tonnes.

But in July 2025, the stock of rice was 48.66 lakh tonnes more than 326.14 lakh tonnes and the wheat stock was 82.39 lakh tonnes more than 282.61 lakh tonnes.

However, there was a decrease in the stock of paddy and it dropped from 237.09 lakh tonnes on July 1, 2024 and 322.55 lakh tonnes in June 2025 to 198.90 lakh tonnes on July 1, 2025.

It is worth mentioning that the government procurement of wheat has been stopped from June 30, but the procurement of Rabi and summer paddy is ongoing in some areas.

This time, wheat procurement has crossed 300 lakh tonnes, while rice procurement has increased by 1 percent compared to last year.

Government procurement of paddy will start again from October 2025, while wheat procurement will resume in March-April next year.

The government has sufficient stock of food grains to meet all domestic requirements and there is no threat to national food security.

The supply and availability of rice and wheat in the domestic market remains stable, while the government is planning to start selling wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) from next month.

The presence of extremely large stock of rice may create challenges for its safe storage during the next Kharif marketing season (2025–26).
