Islamabad. The crisis of sugar shortage in Pakistan is continuously deepening and a sharp rise is being seen in its retail price.
In view of this, it was decided to import sugar from abroad and the government agency - Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) issued an international tender for the import of up to one lakh tons of sugar. But only a deal of 55 thousand tons could be finalized out of this.
Although four bids were received in this global tender, only 2 of them were accepted. Under this, an order was given to Dubai-based company Al Khaleej Sugars to supply 30 thousand tons of medium grade sugar and a multinational company - Louis Dreyfus to supply 25 thousand tons of fine grade sugar.
The price of medium grade sugar was fixed at $ 586 per ton and the price of fine grade sugar was fixed at $ 580 per ton, which also includes shipment expenses.
Another bidder has been asked to revise his price, which has increased the possibility of sugar being purchased from him in the next few days.
It is worth mentioning that with the aim of increasing supply and availability in the domestic sector and controlling the rise in prices, the federal government of Pakistan has planned to import 5 lakh tonnes of sugar from abroad and the current purchase is a part of it.
In recent weeks, the retail price of sugar in Pakistan has increased very rapidly, which has increased the difficulties of the common people. Black marketing of sugar is going on in full swing in Pakistan.
As a result, the price of sugar has jumped to more than Rs 200 per kg in many areas. According to trade analysts, it is very difficult to control the rise in sugar prices due to this limited import.
The situation will not improve until there is an expected increase in domestic production. Import of sugar will be costly for Pakistan because its financial condition is not good and foreign exchange reserves are continuously decreasing rapidly.
