Palm Oil Production Declines in Indonesia in 2024

Jakarta: According to the Indonesia Palm Oil Association (IPOA)crude palm oil (CPO) production in December 2024 dropped by 10.55%, from 43.33 lakh tonnes to 38.76 lakh tonnes compared to November. Palm kernel oil (PKO) production also fell from 4.12 lakh tonnes to 3.61 lakh tonnes.


For the full year 2024, Indonesia’s total CPO production stood at 481.64 lakh tonnes, and PKO at 45.98 lakh tonnes, making the combined output 527.62 lakh tonnes — down 3.80% from 548.44 lakh tonnes in 2023.


Despite the drop in production, domestic consumption rose, reaching 238.59 lakh tonnes in 2024, up 2.78% from 2023. While consumption for food and oleo chemicals slightly declined, biodiesel usage rose by 7.51%, from 106.47 lakh tonnes to 114.47 lakh tonnes.


However, exports fell sharply in December by 21.88%, from 26.37 lakh tonnes to 20.60 lakh tonnes. On an annual basis, total exports dropped by 26.80 lakh tonnes, from 322.15 lakh tonnes in 2023 to 295.35 lakh tonnes in 2024. Exports to India, China, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and the US also saw minor declines.
