Regina. Preparations for harvesting of new pea crop have started gaining momentum in both the top producing provinces of Prairies division in Western Canada- Saskatchewan and Alberta and due to increased supply of new goods in the markets and slow pace of purchases by major importing countries, its prices have softened further during the current week.
Based on movement and location, the delivery price of yellow peas has come down to $ 8.00-8.50 per bushel. However, it is becoming very difficult to find buyers at the level of $ 8.50 per bushel.
According to trade analysts, due to lack of demand from end users, there is pressure on the prices of yellow peas. Similarly, the price of green peas has also fallen to $ 12.00-12.50 per bushel,
which is 50 cents less than last week's high price. It is being reported that the quality of green peas has been affected due to unseasonal rains, due to which its price may soften further.
Only yellow peas are imported to India and the government has exempted its import from customs duty till March 31, 2026. Indian importers are not in a hurry to buy it as they are confident that prices will soften further when the new crop is harvested vigorously in Canada. The market for Maple peas is quiet and no fluctuations are being seen in its prices.
Canadian exporters have high expectations from India and China but both these major importing countries have their own problems.
After imposing heavy customs duty on the import of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada, the Chinese government imposed a high import duty of 100 percent on Canadian peas in March 2025. Efforts made so far to get it removed have not been successful. Meanwhile,
there has been stability in the pulses market in India and the complexity of supply and availability has ended to a large extent. Although the import of gram from Australia and Africa and yellow peas from Canada and Russia is expected to increase slightly during the festive season, its level may remain much lower than last year.
