Pea prices stable in Canada amid uncertainty over customs duty in India

In Canada, the price of peas has remained stable recently, with yellow peas priced between $10.50 and $11.00 per bushel and green peas between $16.00 and $16.50 per bushel.

The price of Maple peas, however, is slightly higher, ranging from $19 to $24 per bushel, reflecting increased interest from traders. While the price is steady, Canadian producers and exporters are closely monitoring the situation in India, where the duty-free import of yellow peas will end on December 31, 2024.

There are concerns that if the import duty is re-imposed after this date, it could significantly affect India's ability to import peas from countries like Canada.

In India, there is a good stock of yellow peas already imported, but the uncertainty regarding the duty has caused importers to hesitate in selling at lower prices.

This situation might lead to an increase in prices in India as the deadline approaches. Moreover, the sowing area for peas in India has increased slightly, reaching 7.54 lakh hectares, surpassing the five-year average, indicating a possible boost in domestic production.

Despite the uncertainty in India, the Canadian pea market remains stable, with limited activity in advance contracts for the new crop expected to be sown between April and June 2025.
