Possible challenges in upcoming paddy procurement in Punjab
★ Punjab currently has stocks of about 14.6 million tonnes of rice and 7.8 million tonnes of wheat in warehouses, while the state’s storage capacity is 18 million tonnes.
★ Considering the estimated upcoming procurement of 19 million tonnes, the state may face a shortage of storage space.
★ In addition, Punjab’s millers have refused to mill hybrid varieties of paddy, stating that hybrid rice gives an out-turn ratio of only 45% broken rice compared to 66% for conventional varieties, leading to losses for millers.
