Preparations for storage begin along with wheat sowing: Punjab
The Punjab government is proactively addressing storage challenges for the upcoming wheat harvest by starting preparations early, even before the sowing of wheat is completed. This comes as a response to last year's storage issues, especially after the state's paddy storage crisis.
Key points from the current situation:
Storage Shortage: The government has estimated a shortage of approximately 40 lakh metric tonnes of storage capacity for the upcoming wheat season. This shortage could put pressure on storage infrastructure during peak harvest.
Wheat Sowing Area: Wheat sowing in Punjab this year is expected to cover 35 lakh hectares, which is likely to result in a large volume of produce that will require careful storage management.
Temporary Storage Solutions: Similar to last year, wheat may once again be stored on plinths (raised platforms) due to a lack of adequate warehouse space. This method is less ideal but often used when space is constrained.
Exploring Temporary Storage Spaces: The government is taking steps to identify vacant spaces for temporary storage, hoping to reduce logistical challenges as much as possible.
The government's decision to start exploring storage options ahead of time aims to minimize the problems experienced during the previous harvests and ensure smoother procurement and storage processes.
