Prices stable despite some improvement in business in Canadian Kabuli Chana market

The Canadian Kabuli Chana market has shown steady trading activity recently, but prices have remained relatively stable. As of mid-November,

the standard quality number 2 Kabuli Chana has been trading at an FOB price of 40-41 cents per pound, with at least 20% of the grain size being 9 mm. Despite some improvement in business, the market has not seen significant price fluctuations.

According to StatsCan's latest report, the production of Kabuli Chana in Canada is expected to rise substantially, from 159,000 tonnes in the 2023-24 season to a projected 287,000 tonnes in the 2024-25 season.

However, some industry analysts express skepticism about such a large increase, especially given the past production figures: 146,000 tonnes in 2022-23 and over 91,000 tonnes in 2021-22. While the sowing area for chickpeas in Canada has increased and weather conditions have been favorable, many doubt the feasibility of such a sharp production surge in a single season.

Moreover, Canada faces significant competition from chickpeas produced in Argentina and Russia, which may limit price increases. The export market may also struggle to absorb these potential price hikes, given the challenging market dynamics.

The area sown for the upcoming crop in April-May will depend heavily on market prices and existing surplus stocks. With improved production in the US, imports from Canada are expected to decrease, adding further pressure on the Canadian market.
