Production area of Kharif crops reached above 1063 lakh hectare

New Delhi. Latest data of the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that during the current year, till August 27,
the total production area of Kharif crops at the national level has increased to 1065.08 lakh hectare, which is about 20 lakh hectare more than the sowing area of 1044.85 lakh hectare during the same period last year.
According to official data, during the current Kharif season, compared to last year, the production area of paddy jumped from 378.04 lakh hectare to 394.28 lakh hectare,
the sowing area of pulses increased from 115.55 lakh hectare to 122.16 lakh hectare, the area of oilseeds improved from 187.36 lakh hectare to 188.37 lakh hectare and the area of coarse grains including Shri Anna increased from 177.50 lakh hectare to 185.51 lakh hectare.
In cash or industrial crops, sugarcane sowing area improved from 57.11 lakh hectare to 57.68 lakh hectare but cotton area reduced from 122.74 lakh hectare to 111.39 lakh hectare.
In pulses crops, Arhar (Tuvar) production area jumped from 40.74 lakh hectare to 45.78 lakh hectare and moong sowing area increased from 30.57 lakh hectare to 34.07 lakh hectare while on the other hand black gram area fell from 30.81 lakh hectare to 29.04 lakh hectare and moth area slipped from 9.37 lakh hectare to 9.12 lakh hectare.
In oilseed crops, production area of groundnut jumped from 43.14 lakh hectare to 46.82 lakh hectare and soybean sowing area increased from 123.85 lakh hectare to 125.11 lakh hectare but area of sesame fell from 11.58 lakh hectare to 10.67 lakh hectare and castor area decreased from 7.71 lakh hectare to 4.70 lakh hectare.
In coarse cereals, market sowing area fell from 70 lakh hectare to 68.85 lakh hectare but area of maize jumped from 81.25 lakh hectare to 87.23 lakh hectare. Sowing of Kharif crops has now reached its final stage.
