Washington. Data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows that the production area of gram in America has jumped 42% this time as compared to last year and reached 5,29,900 acres. This includes area of 3,89,870 acres of coarse (large) grained Kabuli gram, 1,30,022 acres of small grained Kabuli gram and 11,839 acres of Desi gram.
If this time the yield rate reaches the five-year average, then the total production of gram in America can more than double from last year's 2,14,189 tons and reach 4,72,700 tons. Scattered harvesting and preparation of the new crop has started.
According to trade analysts, due to a great increase in domestic production, this time the import of Kabuli chana from Canada to the US is likely to fall significantly.
Imports from Mexico may also decline there. On the other hand, the US will need to expand the export market for its Kabuli chana.
In the marketing season of 2023-24, 80,800 tonnes of Kabuli chana was exported from the US, while in the marketing season of 2024-25, its total export is expected to more than double to 1,92,500 tonnes. Kabuli chana is exported from the US to many countries.
The Pulse Atlas data of the Global Pulse Confederation shows that in the year 2023, 1.50 lakh tonnes of Kabuli chana was exported from Canada and the US was its leading importer with a purchase of 51 thousand tonnes.
Turkey was at the second position, which imported 32 thousand tonnes. Pakistan imported 26 thousand tonnes of Kabuli chana and stood third.
If imports from Canada to the US fall, the difficulties for Canadian producers and exporters will increase as the US itself can pose a serious challenge to it in the global export market. Outstanding stocks in the US are also expected to increase significantly.
