Canberra. Compared to last year, production of all four major crops—wheat, canola, barley, and gram—is expected to decline in Australia during the 2025–26 season, with the exception of lentils.
Lentil production is projected to rise by 17 percent to 15 lakh tonnes, which is 71 percent higher than the 10-year average.
In contrast, wheat production is estimated to decline by 10 percent to 306 lakh tonnes, canola production by 6 percent to 57 lakh tonnes, barley by 3 percent to 128 lakh tonnes, and gram by 17 percent to 19 lakh tonnes.
Although there has been some increase in gram sowing area, the average yield is expected to drop significantly.
According to government agency ABARES, the total production area for winter pulses in Australia is projected to rise by 2 percent to 32 lakh hectares compared to last year.
This includes increases in the sowing areas for gram, lentil, and lupin. The gram sowing area is estimated to increase by 2 percent to 11 lakh hectares, and lentil area is also expected to reach 11 lakh hectares.
However, the sowing area for canola is likely to decrease by 1 percent and remain around 34 lakh hectares. While barley and canola may see only a slight drop in production, the declines in wheat and gram output are expected to be more significant.
