New Delhi. Two central agencies, NAFED and NCCF, are procuring tur, urad, and moong pulses at Minimum Support Price (MSP) directly from farmers who have already registered themselves in various states across the country.
NCCF is procuring urad and tur from farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Karnataka, while NAFED is procuring tur in Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. Procurement of Rabi pulses – gram and lentil – will begin in the coming months.
Meanwhile, the Union Agriculture Ministry has written to the governments of major producing states, urging them to waive mandi tax and other charges on the procurement of pulses by government agencies.
The Ministry stated that state-level agencies are already procuring pulses from farmers at the central price under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), and now central agencies like NAFED and NCCF have also started direct procurement. This will ensure that a larger number of pulse producers benefit from the support price.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, the active participation of both state and central agencies will provide pulse producers with more options for selling their produce. This will help reduce crowding at government procurement centers and prevent farmers from having to wait for long periods.
Procurement centers have been opened in the market yards of important Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) in major producing states, which will provide significant relief to farmers.
Currently, 11.80 lakh farmers are registered on the NAFED portal and 16 lakh farmers on the NCCF portal, from whom the procurement of pulses has commenced.
