★ In the last season, against the procurement target of 45 lakh tonnes, only 15 lakh tonnes could be procured — including 3.2 lakh tonnes of Chana (against the target of 28) and 6 lakh tonnes of Tur (against the target of 13).
★ At present, prices of all pulses are below MSP, which may affect the upcoming sowing season.
★ If the market continues in this manner, farmers’ inclination toward pulses will decrease, and like in the case of oilseeds, the country will also become dependent on foreign markets for pulses.
★ The target set under the National Pulses Mission in the last budget will not be achieved.
★ The government must take immediate cognizance of the issue and make changes in import duties on pulses.
