New Delhi. India's northeastern neighbor Myanmar is regularly exporting Urad, Tuvar and Moong. Out of this, most of Urad and Tuvar is being sent to India while Moong is exported to other countries.

Actually, the economic condition of the pulse producers of Myanmar is not very strong and neither do they have the capacity to keep the stock of pulses with them for a long time.

Due to monetary fluctuations, the budget of the exporters also remains weak, so farmers regularly supply (sell) pulses to traders / exporters and foreign importers. They do not try to keep its stock. The situation is being seen here during the current year as well.

Data from an exporter's organization shows that during the first half of the Kahlu calendar year, i.e. from January to June 2024, 4,60,729 tonnes of urad, 1,89,708 tonnes of tur (tuvar) and 3,88,136 tonnes of moong were exported from Myanmar. Thus, during the period under review, the total export of these three major pulses from there reached 10,38,573 tonnes.

The maximum import of urad in India is from Myanmar, while tuvar is also imported from there on a large scale. However, huge imports of tuvar are also done from African countries and especially Mozambique, Malawi and Sudan etc. Similarly, huge imports of lentils from Australia and Canada and yellow peas from Russia and Canada are being done.

Myanmar exporters keep a close eye on the ups and downs in the prices of urad and tuvar in the Indian market for the contract and keep increasing and decreasing the price of their stock accordingly. This causes problems for Indian importers.

According to Myanmar's exporting organization - Overseas Agri Traders Association (OATA), 60-65 thousand tonnes of pulses are exported to India from Myanmar every month.

During the current year, the export of pulses from Myanmar to India has been about 50 percent more than the average shipment of the last three years.

According to the available data, India imported 6.60 lakh tonnes of urad and 2.10 lakh tonnes of tuvar from Myanmar in the year 2021-22, while in 2022-23, the import of urad decreased to 5.10 lakh tonnes,

but the import of tuvar increased slightly to 2.40 lakh tonnes. In 2023-24, the import of urad increased to 6.30 lakh tonnes, while the import of tuvar remained stable at 2.40 lakh tonnes.
