Brisbane. In central Queensland, the main producer of gram in Australia, the process of flowering and grain formation has started in the plants and with the days getting longer and the temperature increasing,
it seems that the harvesting of this early sown crop of gram can start from next month. Along with this, bulk export of gram can also start.
The price of new crop gram up to Brisbane port for November-December delivery is being reported to be 755-760 dollars per tonne, which is slightly higher than last month.
But at present, it is being traded in limited quantities. Apart from central Queensland, harvesting of new crop of gram can also start soon in Western Downs region and Maranoa division. Its trade in containers is likely to start from there. Shipment of gram can start in bulk as well as containers from Brisbane port.
According to a leading trade analyst, the gram crop in major producing areas of Australia appears to be in good condition.
The month of Ramadan is going to start from mid-February 2026 and hence other Muslim majority countries including Bangladesh may try to build stock by importing large quantities of gram much before that.
But its large import in India is doubtful. Till 31 March 2025, gram was being imported duty free in India but after that a customs duty of 10 percent was imposed on it. In recent months, very small quantities of gram were exported from Australia to India.
