Rabi and Summer Maize Crop Status and Market Outlook
Sowing
★ In the Rabi season, maize sowing increased by 192,000 hectares compared to the previous season, reaching 2.367 million hectares.
★ Sowing increased in almost all states.
★ In the summer season, maize sowing slightly declined compared to last year, reaching 286,000 hectares.
★ Due to higher prices, farmers were encouraged to increase sowing.

Crop Condition
★ The crop is in excellent condition across regions in Bihar, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
★ There has been no crop damage reported.
★ In Bihar, the new crop will arrive in May, and production is expected to increase by 10–15% compared to last year.
★ In Dhule (Maharashtra), the crop is healthy, and sowing increased by 10% over last year.
★ In Vijayapura (Karnataka), the crop condition is also good, with production expected to rise by 10–15%.
★ In Champaran (Bihar), maize sowing increased by 5–10% compared to last year, and the crop condition is excellent.

Maize Market Prices
★ On March 18, the bilty (delivery) prices for maize were:
 – Delhi (MP): Rs. 2660 (Rs. 2625 in January)
 – Jahangirabad: Rs. 2250 (Rs. 2400 in January)
 – Bhusawal: Rs. 2210 (Rs. 2270 in January)
 – Begusarai: Rs. 2150 (Rs. 2725 in January)
 – Gulabbagh (new maize): Rs. 2300 (Rs. 2650 in January)
 – Gulbarga: Rs. 2500–2800 (Rs. 2900 in January)
★ Except for Delhi, prices in all other markets have declined since January.
★ On average, a price drop of around ₹150 per quintal has been observed.
★ The decline is attributed to increased use of alternative crops/products for ethanol production.
★ The government recently approved ethanol production from sugar, molasses, and rice, which impacted maize demand.
★ According to iGrain India, prices may fall further with the upcoming harvest.
★ It would be wise to sell for profit-booking at this point.
