Rabi season coarse cereals area slightly behind last year

New Delhi. After fluctuating, Rabi season coarse cereals area finally reached very close to last year, for which mainly good increase in maize area can be held responsible.
There was a huge decline in the area of sorghum and barley area also lagged behind, but maize sowing area increased by about 2 lakh hectares, which was already expected.
According to official data, in the current Rabi season, the total production area of coarse cereals including Shri Anna reached 55.67 lakh hectares, which is 22 thousand hectares less than the sowing area of 55.89 lakh hectares in the same period last year, but 2.21 lakh hectares more than the normal average area of 53.46 lakh hectares.
The sowing process is almost over. In comparison to last year, during the current Rabi season, the production area of Jowar (Sorghum) decreased from 26.60 lakh hectares to 24.35 lakh hectares and the area of Barley decreased from 6.70 lakh hectares to 6.62 lakh hectares,
but the sowing area of Maize increased from 21.75 lakh hectares to 23.67 lakh hectares. Compared to the normal average area, the production area of Jowar remained almost the same, but the sowing area of Maize and Barley increased.
In the Rabi season, along with Bajra and Ragi, the cultivation of Small Millets is also done in a limited area, whereas its production mainly takes place in the Kharif season. In the Kharif season, the cultivation of Jowar and Maize is also done on a large scale.
There is a tremendous industrial demand for Maize, due to which its price is much higher than the minimum support price of Rs 2225 per quintal.
