Chennai: Global weather agencies, along with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), have stated that due to the active Northeast monsoon, light to moderate rainfall is likely in several parts of South India during the first week of the new year (2026). This has already begun. The areas likely to receive rainfall include southern Tamil Nadu and its coastal regions, Puducherry and areas south of it, and most of Kerala. A cyclonic circulation was moving towards Sri Lanka during the last week of 2025, but later it shifted eastward and is now entering Indian territory. As a result, several areas received rainfall last week, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands experienced rain during the first two days of this week. The rain trend is now being observed towards Sri Lanka and the Tamil Nadu coast. Heavy rainfall of up to 10 cm was recorded in Nicobar. A warning has been issued for strong winds and rain in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Somalia coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and some parts of the adjoining Comorin region for the next few days. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana also received rainfall during the last few days. From October 1 to December 29, 2025, the Northeast monsoon brought significant rainfall from Telangana and Rayalaseema in the east to Lakshadweep in the west. During this period, Telangana recorded a 45 percent surplus rainfall compared to the normal average, and Rayalaseema (Andhra Pradesh) recorded a 34 percent surplus. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, coastal Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu also received above-normal rainfall.
