New Delhi. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that, due to a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Another low-pressure area is likely to form and intensify over the Bay of Bengal next week, which is expected to sustain the current spell of rain, potentially bringing widespread, significant precipitation across the southern states.
According to the Meteorological Department, dense, low-level clouds currently cover the coastal belt—stretching from Kalavi in southern coastal Andhra Pradesh to Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, and extending across the entire Palk Strait—as a result of the low-pressure system over the adjacent Bay of Bengal. The Northeast Monsoon is currently highly active over the southern peninsula, causing intense rainfall in many areas—a trend likely to persist.
A cyclonic circulation is developing over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, near the coast of Tamil Nadu, which may lead to strong wind currents. Additionally, a trough is moving toward the northern coast of Andhra Pradesh, with heavy rainfall anticipated in several regions. This is expected to provide relief to Kharif crops while also ensuring sufficient soil moisture for the sowing of Rabi crops.
