The recent rainfall in northern Australia has significantly impacted the harvest of crops such as grains, pulses, and oilseeds.
The weather disruptions have led to a halt in harvesting activities and raised concerns about the quality of the crops. Additionally, the ongoing rainfall has made transportation of agricultural products challenging, leading to delays in delivery and increasing prices for customers.
The weather conditions are now beginning to improve, with the rainy season tapering off, which may facilitate smoother delivery processes in the near future.
Meanwhile, in the southern regions of Australia, the harvesting of crops continues at full pace. However, the extreme heat in some areas and heavy rainfall in others have slowed down the progress slightly.
In northern Australia, farmers are focusing on the sale of Desi gram, while in the south, the emphasis is on canola and lentils. Efforts are also underway to boost wheat and barley production in other regions.
As for market prices, there have been some fluctuations in the prices of crops like wheat, barley, and sorghum. On November 14, 2024, the price of barley for immediate sale in the Downs region was $315 per tonne, while wheat was priced at $345 per tonne,
and sorghum at $325 per tonne. For January and March forward sales, barley was priced at $320 per tonne, wheat at $345 per tonne, and sorghum at $330 per tonne. In Melbourne, the prices were similarly reflective of this trend, with barley priced at $320 and $330 per tonne, and white wheat at $330 and $335 per tonne.
Overall, while the weather has disrupted harvest schedules and affected prices, the situation is expected to improve with the clearing of rains and a return to more favorable conditions for crop delivery.
