Rainfall situation in South India and its impact on Kharif crops
★ Heavy rainfall over the past two weeks has turned the monsoon in South India from below normal to above normal.
★ The Meteorological Department has predicted above-normal rainfall across most parts of South India from August to September.
★ According to the department, rainfall was 19% below normal between July 31 and August 6, 41% above normal during August 5–13, and 95% above normal on August 14–15.
★ In Telangana, Kharif crop acreage has increased by 20%, while in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka sowing has also exceeded last year’s levels.
★ In some parts of Karnataka, pulses have suffered minor damage due to rains, but other crops like paddy, maize, and soybean have not been affected so far.
★ Overall, South India has received good rainfall till now.
★ Flowering and grain formation has started in most crops, and further rainfall at this stage could affect productivity. At present, crops no longer need additional rainfall.
