Removal of cotton import duty and its impact on the market
★ Last week, the 10% import duty on cotton was removed, with imports allowed until September 30, 2025.
★ The cotton industry welcomed this decision, but traders and farmers within the sector are not pleased.
★ In the previous season, CCI had procured 10 million bales of cotton, which was sold at ₹57,000 per candy.
★ After the removal of duty, the same cotton may now be sold at ₹50,000–51,000 per candy.
★ The cut in import duty is expected to bring down cotton prices, which could negatively impact farmers.
