New Delhi: The latest data from the Central Water Commission shows that the water levels in the reservoirs of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Meghalaya, and Andhra Pradesh are higher compared to other states in the country. Meghalaya and Goa each have one reservoir with water stock at 100 percent and 95 percent, respectively, of their total storage capacity.
According to the commission's report, 85 percent of the water storage is available in the 53 major reservoirs of the western region. This includes 87 percent in Maharashtra and 83 percent in Gujarat, while the water level in Goa was recorded at 95 percent.
As far as the southern states are concerned, the reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh have 84 percent of their storage capacity, and Tamil Nadu has 76 percent, while the water level was estimated at 70 percent in Kerala, 67 percent in Telangana, and 64 percent in Karnataka.
In South India, only the dams in Andhra Pradesh have higher water levels than last year. The 47 reservoirs in this region have a water stock of 39.057 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is 70.6 percent of their total storage capacity of 55.287 BCM. During the same period last year, these dams and reservoirs had a water stock of 40.392 BCM, or 73 percent.
In Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, six dams have water levels between 95 and 100 percent, which can ensure sufficient water availability for irrigating Rabi crops. Nationally, 37 reservoirs have more than 90 percent water storage.
The reservoirs in the northern region have 69 percent water. Rajasthan has 86 percent, Punjab has 70 percent, and Himachal Pradesh has 63 percent water stock available.
