The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released its December report, forecasting a rise in global rice production for the 2024-25 season. The global rice output is expected to reach 5337 lakh tons, marking an increase of 110 lakh tons compared to the previous season's 5227 lakh tons.

In particular, rice production in India and China is anticipated to see notable increases. India's production is projected to grow by 71.70 lakh tons, rising from 1378.30 lakh tons in 2023-24 to 1450 lakh tons in 2024-25.

Meanwhile, China's output is expected to increase by 13.80 lakh tons, from 1446.20 lakh tons to 1460 lakh tons. With such rapid growth in production, India may soon surpass China to become the world’s leading rice producer.

Other countries are also seeing growth in production. In Vietnam, production is expected to improve by 2 lakh tons, from 263 lakh tons to 265 lakh tons, and Indonesia’s output is set to rise by 9.80 lakh tons, from 330.20 lakh tons to 340 lakh tons. However, the Philippines' production is expected to decline by 3.30 lakh tons, from 123.30 lakh tons to 130 lakh tons.

In terms of exports, India is expected to significantly boost its rice exports, largely due to the government's removal of export restrictions. Indian rice is in high demand in many countries across Asia and Africa.

As a result, India’s rice exports are poised for substantial growth. At the same time, countries like China and the Philippines are anticipated to increase their rice imports in the 2024-25 season.

China’s rice imports are projected to rise from 15.30 lakh tons in 2023-24 to 17 lakh tons, while the Philippines’ imports are expected to grow from 45 lakh tons to 53 lakh tons.

These developments reflect both the growth in rice production in key producing countries and the shifting dynamics in global rice trade.
