Mumbai. Kharif crops across 6.869 million hectares in Maharashtra are estimated to have been damaged or destroyed due to the heavy rains and devastating floods of August-September.

This includes the Marathwada division and surrounding areas, where various crops have suffered significant losses. The Maharashtra government is preparing a proposal to submit to the central government seeking financial assistance for flood-affected farmers. Relief and Rehabilitation Department officials say the devastating floods have damaged not only crops but also infrastructure in many areas.

The proposal for financial assistance was seriously discussed in an important meeting between the Maharashtra Chief Minister and the two Deputy Chief Ministers.

The government says that the floods and rains have caused significant damage to Kharif crops in the Marathwada division, inundating fields and residential complexes. Similar damage was also seen in some areas of the Vidarbha division and western Maharashtra.

This year, the total Kharif crop production area in Maharashtra was around 145 million hectares, of which crops are expected to be damaged in approximately 6.9 million hectares.

The districts in Maharashtra that have suffered the most damage to Kharif crops include Beed, Nanded, Yavatmal, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Latur, Solapur,

Dharashiv, Jalna, Parbhani, Buldhana, Hingoli, Nashik, Washim, and Dhule. Crops in these districts have been destroyed, covering between 3 and 7 lakh hectares.

Farmer organizations are strongly demanding compensation from the government at the rate of ₹50,000 per hectare. Some MPs are also urging the government to provide adequate support and assistance to farmers in this time of crisis and announce loan waivers.

The Relief and Rehabilitation Department is also making efforts to assist farmers. The devastating floods have also destroyed irrigation equipment or swept it away, causing severe hardship for farmers.
