Sharp Decline in Castor Seed Production Expected
★ According to the second estimates by SEA, India's castor seed production for 2024-25 is expected to drop sharply from 1.976 million tonnes to just 1.558 million tonnes.
★ Gujarat, the largest castor seed-producing state, is also witnessing a major decline. Production in Gujarat, which stood at 1.574 million tonnes in 2023-24, is now projected to shrink to around 1.226 million tonnes in 2024-25.
★ The situation in Rajasthan is no better, where output is likely to fall from 313,900 tonnes to 271,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, production in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is expected to remain stable.
★ Experts attribute the fall in production to a reduction in the sowing area and uncertain weather conditions.
★ If this downward trend in production continues, castor seed prices could witness a sharp surge in the near future.
