Kiev. Only 1.99 lakh tonnes of sunflower oil could be exported from Ukraine, a country located in the Black Sea region, in 2024, which was 51.8 percent less than the spectacular export of 4.13 lakh tonnes in August 2023.

According to a leading agricultural consultancy firm, there is a possibility of decline in the production of sunflower and its oil in Ukraine during the current year as compared to last year, which may affect the exports.

The agricultural consultancy firm has estimated the production of 60.90 lakh tonnes of sunflower oil in Ukraine and export of 57.20 lakh tonnes from Ukraine during the current marketing season (September-August) of 2024-25. According to the firm,

during the 2023-24 season, 66.30 lakh tonnes of sunflower oil was produced from there while it succeeded in exporting 62.50 lakh tonnes.

Earlier, most of the sunflower oil was imported from Ukraine in India but after the war with Russia started, the pace of import from there started slowing down and now India is importing most of it.

Romania and Argentina have also overtaken Ukraine in terms of supply of sunflower oil to India. Now Ukraine is exporting more of it to the European Union.
