Pune: The latest figures released by the Maharashtra Sugar Commissionerate show a tremendous increase in sugar production in the state. As of January 8, 2026, sugarcane crushing in the current season reached 632.92 lakh tonnes, up from 434.14 lakh tonnes in the previous marketing season.
This resulted in a surge in sugar production from 378.03 lakh quintals to 562.97 lakh quintals. The average sugar recovery rate from sugarcane in the state also improved from 8.71 percent to 8.89 percent.
During the last season, sugarcane crushing commenced at 199 sugar mills, including 98 in the cooperative sector and 101 in the private sector.
In contrast, in the current season, crushing is underway at a total of 197 mills, comprising 99 in the private sector and 98 in the cooperative sector.
According to the available data, as of January 8, during the current marketing season, Kolhapur division in Maharashtra produced 144.25 lakh quintals of sugar, Pune division 134.55 lakh quintals, Solapur division 110.43 lakh quintals, Ahmednagar 65.56 lakh quintals, and Sambhaji Nagar 45.63 lakh quintals.
Furthermore, indications suggest that sugar production in Ahmednagar, Nagpur, Nanded, and Amravati divisions is also higher than last year.
Although the highest amount of sugarcane crushing took place in the Pune division this time, the highest sugar production was recorded in the Kolhapur division due to a higher average sugar recovery rate there.
