New Delhi. Although the production estimate of cardamom is changing on the basis of weather and rainfall conditions in top producing states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the total production is expected to be better than last year.
For the current year, the production of small cardamom was earlier estimated to be 32-33 thousand tonnes, but due to natural disasters or adverse weather, it is expected to fall by 10-15 percent, due to which the total production may remain 29-30 thousand tonnes. Last year, the production was estimated to be 26-27 thousand tonnes.
The outstanding stock of small cardamom with producers and traders is quite low because its domestic and export business was better with weak production last year (marketing season).
The new marketing season of cardamom has formally started from August 1. There was some delay in the plucking and preparation of the new crop, but now there are signs of its pace increasing.
The stock is also being reported to be low at the consumer centers, due to which the dealers from Disawari are becoming active in its purchase in the producing areas.
The Spices Board has advised the buyers to buy cardamom only in the auctions conducted by licensed and authorized firms and has warned that the withdrawals of fake companies will be considered illegal.
The auction of small cardamom is conducted through electronic method in Puttady of Kerala and Bodinayakanur of Tamil Nadu, which is considered legal.
The Spices Board has given permission to conduct auction of cardamom on verbal (manual) basis at some other places.
It is understood that due to the auctions conducted in an illegal manner, there was pressure on the prices of small cardamom. Now efforts are being made to control this.
The average auction price of cardamom is currently around Rs 2450 per kg, while soon there is a possibility of strong festive demand in it, due to which some increase in prices is expected.
Due to reduced competition from Guatemala, the demand for Indian cardamom is expected to remain strong in the Gulf countries.
The arrival of cardamom in the auction centers will increase but at the same time the number of buyers will also increase due to which the prices may remain strong amid better business.
