Thiruvananthapuram. After the initial increase, there was a shortage of rain in South India and this deficiency was being felt especially in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but the intermittent rains during the last two weeks not only made up for this deficiency but also increased the total rainfall level to above the normal average.

The Meteorological Department says that there may be more than normal rainfall in the remaining period of the southwest monsoon season.

This will not only help in increasing the pace of sowing of Kharif crops but will also make it possible for better growth of the crops sown earlier.

According to the long-term forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department, most parts of South India may receive normal or more rainfall during August-September, but some parts of coastal Karnataka and Kerala may face shortage of rain. Available data shows that between June 1 and August 21, the southern peninsula of the country received a total of 542.9 mm of rainfall, which was 9 percent more than the normal average.

Since July, there has been 2 percent less rainfall than the long-term average. Earlier in June too, 156.7 mm rainfall was recorded, which was 3 percent less than the normal average.

Not only this, but the trend of lack of rainfall continued in South India till the beginning of August. Between 31 July and 6 August, there was 19 percent less rainfall than the normal average, but after that the activity of monsoon increased.

After this, during the week of 7 to 13 August, South India received 41 percent more rainfall than the normal average and in the week of 14 to 20 August, it was 95 percent more.

This gave farmers a good opportunity to speed up the sowing of Kharif crops. In the initial phase, till 30 June, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala have received less rainfall than normal and Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have received above normal average.

According to the Hyderabad Meteorological Office, the total rainfall in Telangana is expected to be more than the normal average.

Although during the last 45 days, uneven distribution of rainfall was seen in some parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh, but the system forming in the Bay of Bengal will prove helpful in increasing the scope of rainfall there.
