Soybean Sowing Declines in Key States, Slight Increase at National Level (Data as of 7th and 9th July 2025)
★ According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and various state agriculture departments, soybean sowing has declined in major producing states this year.
★ Maharashtra recorded a sharp drop of 2.59 lakh hectares, with total sowing standing at 40.60 lakh hectares.
★ Rajasthan also saw a decline of 1.20 lakh hectares.
★ Telangana registered a marginal drop of 0.11 lakh hectares.
★ Gujarat, however, showed a slight increase, with 1.58 lakh hectares sown.
★ Madhya Pradesh, another key soybean-producing state, has not released its sowing data yet, but reports suggest a likely reduction in area there as well.
★ Across these four major states, total soybean sowing stood at 53.71 lakh hectares, which is 3.89 lakh hectares less than the previous year.
★ However, at the all-India level, soybean sowing has reached 79.04 lakh hectares — 3.58 lakh hectares more than the same period last year.
★ According to i-Grain India, soybean prices remained below MSP for most of the season — the first time in several years — directly impacting farmers’ incomes. As a result, government agencies had to step in and procure soybean after many years.
★ Rising imports of edible oils and a fall in demand for soymeal have deeply affected all stakeholders in the soybean value chain, leading to losses and weakened morale.
★ The situation has been further aggravated by DDGS (Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles).
★ Additionally, the United States is pressuring India to allow the import of genetically modified (GM) soybeans.
★ If this happens, it could have serious implications not just for soybean, but for the entire oilseed and edible oil market in India.
